"Saudade" por Silvia Cuello (Exhibición y subasta benéfica)

    03 Apr 2021 – 14 Apr 2021

The word of Portuguese origin "saudade" refers to a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves or cares for. The series Saudade was started in Cochabamba by the Spanish artist Silvia Cuello during the lockdown imposed by the Covid19 pandemic which started in March of 2020. The loneliness, isolation, lack of motivation, lethargy, the repressed desires, the encounter with oneself; are reflected in this series integrated by 10 works in small format, created in acrylic on wood board. This series, as it has become a trend in the artist´s work, represents a 180 degree turn from her previous series, a bet intended to discover new languages from technical, stylistic, and conceptual standpoints. By employing compositive resources, but above all a particular use of color and brush work; these works intend to reflect emotional states, intend to transmit the viewer emotions and sensations with which he can easily identify. Female characters often out of place, asleep, longing; compose a series conceived and executed under the extraordinary circumstances that we have all been forced to withstand and under which, for the time being, we must continue living. This exhibition and auction of the artworks by Silvia Cuello are in benefit of the Community Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY). CIWY is a Bolivian NGO dedicated to the rescue of wild animals from illegal trafficking and to providing them with suitable living conditions in their native habitats.

De lo mejor un poco / From the best a little

    02 Mar 2021 – 12 Apr 2021

At Casa Toscana Art Gallery, we are proud to present our first collective exhibit of 2021. From May 2nd to April 2nd we will house the works by 30 invited artists whose works represent some of the best art that is being produced locally, displaying a diversity of styles and techniques. Far from intending to be a repository for the work of established and renowned artists, we rather intend for the show to give a broader and representative view of the local plastic production, by combining high quality works by emerging and established artists. To this end, we have congregated in the same showroom works created with different techniques and contrasting styles, such as collage and watercolor or abstract and constumbrist styles. We have put together works that the artists themselves have identified within their production as representative of their pictorial view, from conceptual and/or technical stand points. We thank every participating artist for responding to our invitation with great enthusiasm and availability: Casa Toscana Art Gallery is your home. We must give our deepest thanks to Gonzalo Ribero, the architect behind this show; who through his inspiration, enthusiasm and hard work, continues to demonstrate that it is possible to make our dreams come truth. We invite you to enjoy the show, and hopefully find in it the piece or pieces that may belong in your home or come to enrich your collection.

Iván Castellón: Los Crucificados / The crucified

    02 Apr 2021 – 02 May 2021

The artist explains: "This is a series of paintings (oil/canvas) that deal with a recurrent theme in the history of art: the crucifixion, which as a mean of torture was not only used for Jesus Christ but also for his contemporaries, other man and woman that were freedom fighters, before and after Christ. Metaphorically and by extension, one can say that crucifixions have been in place from the times of Adan and Eve (or even from pre-Columbian times) to the sacrifices of Luis Espinal, Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz, or the thousands of martyrs from the mines in Potosí, or the plebeian sieges, in Tolata, Senkata and Huayllani. Today, the crucifixion no longer exists in the “civilized” occidental world as a form of coercion; nevertheless, it persists in renewed fashions under other forms of crucifixions of bodies and souls, of men, women, and animals."

José Rodríguez: Citizen of the World

    21 Jan 2021 – 28 Feb 2021

Casa Toscana Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition by José Rodríguez Sánchez entitled “Citizen of the World”. With this exhibition José Rodríguez celebrates 50 years of artistic activity. One of Bolivia´s premier watercolorists and recognized around the world as a major figure for Latin American watercolor art, Rodriguez was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 1958. He started his formal training in the arts at the age of 10. His discovery of watercolor as his media of choice to exploit and complement his creative potential, fortunately, marked a point of no return for his artistic career. Beyond the technical qualities of his work, which are staggering, José Rodriguez has managed to create a singular language, that uses the intrinsic properties of watercolor to merge elements of costumbrism with surrealism, with themes that approach a pictorial parallel to Latin American literary magical realism. José Rodríguez invites you: "To share this journey through a dialogue using the language of art, the language of light, and the language of water; which is itself the essence of the citizen of the world."

Iván Castellón: Obras en Tiempos de Dictadura y Pandemia

    16 Dec 2020 – 16 Jan 2021

The artist explains: "Until the 80s of the late 20th Century, military coups were a sinister part of life in Bolivia, same as pain and misery. Unfortunately, those events were re-edited in November of 2019, and for a period of one year, in which a handful of civilians, police and military; broke the constitutional order by taking power by the force; and making the massacre, the incarceration and the robbery of public property, their favorite means for domination and revenue. On top of such misfortunes came the advent of the coronavirus pandemic in March of 2020. These happenings are not foreign to my condition as sociologist and painter, and I have portrayed them with the same pain caused by the deaths of sons, mothers, and fathers; massacred at Huayllani and Senkata, or killed by the pandemic".
