People’s Artist - Chittaprosad: In Solidarity, In Solitude

    10 Oct 2020 – 15 Nov 2020

“I was forced by circumstances to turn my brush into as sharp a weapon as I could make it” - Chittaprosad Through his expressive graphic lines, writings, and representations of people most affected by systems of oppression Chittaprosad’s life and work is a testament to art as a practice of dissent and of hope Chittaprosad was a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI), working as an artist-cadre during the turbulent years of the Bengal Famine and leading up to independence, creating stark sketches and caricatures that foregrounded common people's suffering and acts of everyday resistance. Even after leaving the party he continued his search for new socialist solidarities. His explorations of new spaces of political action led him to his work for children through puppets and storytelling, and a shift into a more personal and intimate space of politics. In 1968 he wrote “art is neither a ‘weapon’ [n]or a means of propaganda of any ideology—as we were told a few years ago by the political pundits”, revealing his enduring commitment to developing a visual language that could speak directly to and for all people. Today his images resonate powerfully as we witness dissent and acts of resistance all around the world in our own state of isolation. Join us from October 10 to November 15, 2020 to explore Chittaprosad’s art and activism through our online exhibition and events, and turn to his works for courage and inspiration in these unprecedented times.
