    THE SUCCULENT GARDEN

    08 Jun 2022 – 21 Jun 2022

Women United ART MOVEMENT is proud to present THE SUCCULENT GARDEN a solo exhibit by TARA ESPERANZA ARTIST BIO Tara Esperanza earned a BFA in Painting and graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. In addition, she studied plein air painting in Brittany, France. Inspired by the light and landscape, she later moved from Massachusetts to Santa Fe, NM. She now resides in Oakland California where succulents grow all year long. Tara has exhibited her paintings in galleries throughout the Bay Area, including Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland, Sanchez Contemporary Gallery in Oakland, Orangeland Gallery in San Francisco, and Marin Society of Artists in San Rafael. As well as Sturt Haaga Gallery in Los Angeles, the Museum of Northern California Art in Chico, and San Diego Museum of Art. She is inspired daily by the beauty that surrounds us and she captures images that live on through her art. All of the subjects of her paintings are seen through her eyes in nature. ARTIST STATEMENT In late 2017, Tara Esperanza was commissioned to make a large painting of particular succulents. Though at the time she had not paid much attention to succulents, she was a plant lover. As a result of the commission, she began paying closer attention to succulents on daily dog walks and runs. This quickly became an obsession and from there her series was born. She realized that she had passed many gorgeous plants for years and never noticed their obvious beauty. Now, she aims to make them seen through her paintings. Esperanza is interested in plant personalities. The abundant varieties of texture, color, shape, and how succulents change with the seasons. She celebrates their diversity, how succulents share space, lean on each other, or hold each other up. Esperanza’s paintings look deep into the plants. She aims to bring the viewer in to offer a new perspective and share her intimate viewpoint of succulents through art Website: www.taraesperanza.com IG: @taraesperanza

    FEMININE JOURNEY

    08 Jun 2022 – 21 Jun 2022

Women United ART MOVEMENT is proud to present FEMININE JOURNEY a solo exhibit by LILLY MARTORANA ARTIST BIO Lilly Martorana is a twenty-year-old American artist from Long Island, New York. Growing up in a family of artists, Martorana cultivated her craft throughout her adolescence. She is currently studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design and is on track to graduate in 2022 with her BFA in Painting. Martorana works mainly with charcoal and oil paints with distinct brightly colored subject matter of human forms and landscapes. Martorana uses her paintings as a tool to spread her message of feminism to the public. She believes that woman should be comfortable in their sexuality and leave behind any and all shame surrounding the loving of their bodies. ARTIST STATEMENT I enjoy observing reactions when I unveil my provocative work. Some people take a step back, while others are drawn in closer. My subject matter is greatly influenced by social constructs that oppress women, so the female form is prevalent in my work. I break the stigma around a woman loving their body and their sexuality, so I paint them in the nude. As a woman who developed a bit early in life, I encountered catcalling and assault at an early age. I was taught to cover my chest and shoulders at the ripe age of ten. Although this concept was introduced to me early on, I never quite understood how something so natural as my skin could be negative. It is because of this that I want more women to be confident in their own skin, proudly nude to the world inside and out. Experimentation with color provides a framework for my subject matter. I almost never use actual skin tones, rather, I use a wide variety of color schemes to create a character in each piece. My approach to painting is thick and painterly to mimic the intensity of the themes I portray. I use a palette knife to create impasto marks and reference past genres of painting such as surrealism and impressionism to connect my work to a history of painting. Reclaiming traditional techniques with contemporary concepts. Website: www.lillymartorana.com IG: @artbylillym
