Paul Butterworth

Paul lives and works from his home studio in Cambridge.

He is a 2nd year BA (Hons) Painting student with the University for the Creative Arts - Open College of the Arts and starts his final year in October 2021.

As well as painting Paul is a professional TV/film actor. You may have seen him as Barry in the Full Monty and more recently as Michael Ellacott (Holliday Grainger's dad) in J.K.Rowling's 'Strike' series.

Paul sees painting as acting on canvas where the colours and shapes are the other actors and you perform in the moment, thinking without words.

His first love is colour, even in his more figurative paintings, and he is always trying to create work that affirms our common humanity by connecting directly with the viewer's subconscious.

Cambridge is a city in the UK about 60 miles north of London.

    Abstract Paintings 2021

    30 May 2021 – 30 May 2022

These are 2nd year abstract paintings from my personal practice. I see abstraction as a way of thinking without words. Sometimes they trigger connections or have a starting point in 'real life' and I give them names. But recently I have started painting some fully non representational paintings that are created by reacting to the colours on the canvas and are meant to be enjoyed in themselves just as you might look at a beautiful sunset.

    Figurative Paintings

    30 May 2021 – 30 May 2022

These are my figurative paintings from 2019 to 2021. The early ones are realistic and the later ones symbolic or semi-abstract.
