    JOHN HITCHENS - Vertical Horizontals

    03 Jul 2021 – 03 Sep 2021

The line of the horizon has always been a focus point of my paintings. It is the meeting point between sky and land or sea, and a point of ongoing interaction between them. Over the years, my painting has changed and become more abstract. The bands of my more recent paintings relate to ploughed or furrowed fields, and also to the stacked layers in my wife’s weaving. In the same way in which a dot or an extending line can be seen as the opposite to a circle, the opposite of a horizontal line can be the vertical. In these paintings, opposites become complimenting companions. www.johnhitchens.com represented by www.felixandspear.com

    HEATHS below the Downs

    24 May 2021 – 24 Oct 2021

The photographs in this exhibition give a personal impression of a landscape which was created unintentionally by human activity, and which is now preserved as a habitat in its own right. The heaths below the South Downs were shaped by centuries of use for grazing and turf cutting in a the less intensive rural economy. Changes in land use, residential development and neglect have steadily reduced their size and made lowland heath one of the rarest habitats in Britain.
