    Abstract Art with New Media

    From September 24 to October 22, 2022, Independent & Image Art Space is glad to present a group exhibition “Abstract Art with New Media”. Adolph Gottlieb, an American abstract expressionist painter, sculptor, and printmaker, said, “The role of the artist, of course, has always been that of image-maker. Different times require different images. ... To my mind certain so-called abstraction is not abstraction at all. On the contrary, it is the realism of our time.” Artists worldwide share their idea about abstract art of our time. They may be painting, or artwork created with new media. They may be monumental in scale, may be intense, spontaneous expression, may be a meditative space for ruminating the fundamental questions of human existence. The abstraction has many possibilities.     Fluid Time

    From August 8, 2022 to September 5, 2022, Independent & Image Art Space is glad to present a group exhibition “Fluid Time”. Armen Avanessian, an Austrian philosopher, says that “The basic thesis of the post-contemporary is that time is changing. We are not just living in a new time or accelerated time, but time itself—the direction of time—has changed. We no longer have a linear time, in the sense of the past being followed by the present and then the future. It’s rather the other way around: the future happens before the present, time arrives from the future.” In this new era, time is fluid, and there is no obvious progression from a before, to a during and an after in historical terms. The fluidity of time indicates the blurring of boundaries, escaping categorizations, and not being concretely defined. In such a time how does an artist imagine the future? How to view histories? How to create unexpected narratives and connections to tell untold stories? How to even use time as an artistic medium to interpret the life we experience? Artists: B.     Fu Wenjun Oil Painting Exhibition

    This exhibition presents two series of oil paintings created by the artist Fu Wenjun, "Pick at Random" and "Quiet Leisure". These two series are cross-cultural practices that the artist has made for many years under a multicultural background, showing the artist's understanding and interpretation of the connotation of traditional Chinese culture in the context of modern life. Under the concept of "harmonizing Chinese and Western", Fu Wenjun uses post-modern deconstruction, appropriation and juxtaposition to "reconcile" traditional Chinese ink and western oil painting in many ways. Without changing the structure of pen and ink language, traditional culture is placed in the category of international art. He uses Chinese traditional freehand and Western classical realism as the basic techniques of artistic expression, giving the painting a visual effect between virtual and reality, and fully interprets his creative intentions with a transversal visual perception. He believes that he should have a peaceful and introverted mentality and in-depth look at the connotation of traditional culture instead of living in the imagination of it. Slow down and grasp the connotation of tradition in mutual and repeated encounters. In Fu Wenjun’s view, “The essence of tradition is like the cloud in my paintings. It has undergone countless changes in form over time, but its essence has not changed. What has changed is only the viewer’s thoughts and understanding."

    Art can express a stunning array of diverse and compelling perspectives capturing humanity’s resilience and undaunted hope for a brighter future; a profound awareness of our interconnectedness; a deep aspiration for equality, justice, and inclusion; and a sense of awe for nature's beauty and its power to sustain all life. The artists in the show are from several countries and have shared their views and suggestions about the future by answering the question:  within the context of the "new normal" that has unfolded post-COVID-19, and as we plan and re-build to recovery, what will the future look like?
