Mother Water

06 Jun 2021 – 15 Nov 2021

Almost two-thirds of the surface of the earth is covered by water. Our bodies are half water; half again that of a woman carrying a child. We know that water is life-sustaining for all living beings yet humans largely refuse to care for this resource. For the women artists in this exhibition, bodies of water also exist as social spaces, geographical delineations, political borders and even as family. In the work that inspired Mother Water, a video titled Hueatoyatzintli, Alicia Smith addresses the Rio Grande in Nahuatl, singing to her as a witness to those who have made the crossing and to those who do not survive: “tehwatzin in titēchchīxtika kēmen titonān / You who watches like you are our mother.” We are honored to dedicate this exhibition to Mary Beth Edelson (1933-2021), the celebrated American artist, activist, and an originator of the Feminist Art movement. Included in this exhibit are works from Edelson’s Lifesaver Series, which address the effects of oil spills and her iconic Woman Rising Series, based on private performance rituals often enacted at the water’s edge. Writing in the 1970’s Edelson described the later series as: “a profoundly political act against the patriarchy and for spiritual liberation—the ramifications of which are still unfolding.” Turning to her own words, Edelson’s career which spanned more than five decades has been, in itself, a profoundly political act. With her broad sphere of influence as an organizer of the first conference on women artists (Conference of Women in the Visual Arts, Washington D.C. 1972); an early artist at A.I.R. Gallery, the first all-women’s gallery; her involvement with WAC (Women’s Action Coalition) and art against domestic violence in the 1990’s; and her life-long archiving of Feminist Art activities (archive located at the Fales Library and Special Collections, NYU) we know that the ramifications of Mary Beth Edelson’s work are still unfolding. She will be missed.

Accola Griefen Fine Art: Works by Women from Art on Paper

08 Sep 2022 – 08 Dec 2022

Accola Griefen Fine Art presents innovative works on/with paper from the 1970’s to the preset by a diverse group of women artists including Nancy Cohen, Bang Geul Han, Pat Lasch, JoAnne McFarland, Patsy Norvell, and Mikayla Patton. The works included in this online exhibition as well as additional unframed works by additional artists including Susan Bee, May Stevens, Renée Stout and Rhonda Wall were on view in person at the Art on Paper fair in New York City from September 8 through 11, 2022. More details: www.thepaperfair.com/ny www.accolagriefen.com In addition to the works in this exhibit, Accola Griefen is also pleased to present Bang Geul Han's newest large scale commission for the Art on Paper fair, 'Warp and Weft #05' which functions as a material manifestation of the entangled relationships between women’s reproductive rights and questions of class and race. Legislative bills concerning crime and welfare reform from the 80s and 90s, together with 11 state bills passed in 2022 that restrict abortion access, have been shredded and then painstakingly woven together. The pattern of the weave uses an overshot structure, popularly used by women to make coverlets in the USA during the 18th and 19th centuries. This work is part of an ongoing project by interdisciplinary artist Bang Geul Han, involving hand-woven tapestries constructed from paper printouts of legal documents concerning abortion and anti-immigration memoranda. Accompanying the paper-based tapestries are a photographic series in which the artist wears her sculptural work, making visible the intimate yet often unseen relationship between these legal texts and our bodies and lives. Following the Art on Paper fair, this exhibit will remain online through fall 2022. To inquire about availability of specific works please contact info@accolagriefen.com .
