    LOVE IN LIGHT

    19 Jul 2022 – 02 Aug 2022

ART MUMS UNITED is proud to present LOVE IN LIGHT a solo exhibit by NICKI AULT ABOUT THE SHOW I scoured through files of my recent work to compile an exhibition of paintings that glow with love, light, and beautiful energy. It’s a show curated in memory of my sweet mom, who left this earthly world in December 2021. Her passing is the deepest, most profound loss of my life. During mom’s brief illness, I set up a studio in my parents’ living room so I would be available to help and so mom could watch me paint as she rested on the couch. She watched several of the pieces in this exhibition come to fruition and offered input as they were in progress. We had fun. She had a good eye! My family used one of the paintings as the backdrop image on the memorial card at her funeral. Thinking of mom is comforting but also hurts immensely. The thought of her can bring a smile from ear to ear while simultaneously bringing the biggest pool of tears to the eyes. I am a mother. I see the role in a new light these days. I feel overjoyed with the thought that perhaps I am providing my boys with even a fraction of the love that my mom gave me and my sisters. I am also heartbroken to think that this also means they can’t help but experience this crushing sadness. My paintings have always been an ode to the beauty of the natural world and to the connections people have to the landscape. I like to think that when I go out to search for new scenes to paint, I will find my mom in the sunlight, in the breeze and in the shape of the clouds. ARTIST BIO Canadian artist Nicki Ault has always loved art, but only began to pursue it professionally when her youngest son started Grade One in 2010. Over the next seven years she gradually found more and more time to paint and kept herself accountable by posting to her art blog, “Nicki Ault: Me, Myself and Who Am I?” In March 2011 Nicki’s mixed media piece “In My Aura” was accepted into a show in Ayr, Ontario featuring 100 paintings by 100 female artists from around the world in celebration of the centenary of International Women’s Day. Although she considers herself to be a landscape painter, that particular piece was based around a self-portrait. In 2017, with two galleries asking for her work, she was finally able to commit to a fulltime studio practice. An article was written about Nicki’s work in Galleries West magazine in 2019 and in 2020 she was named a SaskGalleries “Artist to Watch”. Nicki considers herself to be a lifelong student of art, always determined to learn and grow in order to keep moving forward. Although she is largely self-taught, Nicki has taken art classes with talented instructors including Craig Berry, Gord MacDonald and Doug Swinton. She recently began a solo studio practice after working in collectives for the past 11 years. Nicki is represented by galleries in Regina (SK), Calgary (AB) and Winnipeg (MB) and shows her work during the summer season in Waskesiu, Prince Albert National Park. Her paintings can be found in corporate collections in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec as well as private collections internationally. Nicki lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada with her husband and two sons. Website: www.nickiault.com IG: @nicki.ault.studio

THE SUN STILL SHINING ON ME

    19 Jul 2022 – 02 Aug 2022

ART MUMS UNITED is proud to present THE SUN STILL SHINING ON ME a solo exhibit by LESLIE ANNE ABOUT THE SHOW This body of work is a deep dive into my internal process of self-rediscovery. There are themes of personal power, self-love, sexuality, faith in oneself, and faith in a benevolent higher power. Glitter and gold are prominent elements of the art. Not only am I attracted to the look of gold and the way that it reflects light, but it gives a sense of importance and opulence that I really enjoy, especially with reference to Black hair. I initially intended for this show to center the story of my recent divorce, but I realized that would be focusing on the wrong thing. The real story is of resilience and faith. It’s also a love story to myself. I titled the show “The Sun Still Shining on Me” because despite the challenges I’ve faced…I’m still here. Still creating. Still loving. Still optimistic about life. And every day when I wake up and see the sun, I get another chance to create the life I’ve dreamed of. The 17 pieces that were chosen for this exhibition are meant to convey different parts of my journey. Much love. ARTIST BIO Leslie Anne is a contemporary artist based in Atlanta, Georgia by way of East St. Louis, Illinois. Leslie would describe her work as emotionally expressive, colorful, conceptual, and Afrofuturistic. Her art is inspired by prominent themes in her own life, like motherhood, race, relationships, gender, and personal expression. She uses bold contrasting elements to create interesting mixed media works; usually featuring bold colors, glitter, and visions of the sky like clouds and stars. By looking at the art, her hope is that you will find more of yourself. By looking at the art, her hope is that you will find a sense of interconnectedness with all. And ultimately explore more of yourself. Leslie's preferred mediums are painting with acrylic and oil paint, digital collage, illustration, and photography. She specializes in contemporary portraiture. Additional themes include spirituality, symbols, and nature. Leslie's work has been featured in exhibitions and publications around the world. When she is not creating art, she is most likely studying clinical psychology, listening to music, or enjoying the company of her awesome kids Langston and Josephine. ARTIST STATEMENT Making art is like opening a portal and letting pure creation manifest. I am intentional about centering Black people and women in my pieces as a way to celebrate our culture and beauty with nuance. I want to show Black subjects as inherently valuable and worthy of being admired, which is often why my work incorporates crowns and gold elements. My art is as much about the process as it is the physical piece, as creating art opens the space for me to explore myself. I create self portraits as a way to honor my feelings and memorialize that specific time in my life. I'm inspired by the beauty and personal expression of Black people. My references are often individuals from my own life or intriguing images of Black subjects that inspire me in some way. My intention is to give the subject honor, express emotion, and showcase their humanity. In addition to painting, I create collage style digital artwork, incorporating photography, color, glitter, and lots of layers. Website: www.lovela.biz IG: @myleslieanne
