Abandoned; A Retrospective

01 Jan 2021 – 30 Jun 2021

Each of the images are available to purchase from me. Each is A3 (longest side and cost £100 each for an unframed, fine art print using Hahnemühle German Etching archival quality paper. The project Abandoned takes me back to the first year and the first assignment of my degree journey; the topic of the assignment was Quiet Photography. Looking back at the images I chose to submit, I can now see that not all the images convey the truest sense of the term ‘quiet’, especially those that include memories of past conflicts. However, the negative space used in many and the desaturated colours, do follow the concept of Quiet. This was probably my first attempt at bringing together a cohesive photographic project and set me on course for a successful educational journey. Thank you to those at Tresham College, that helped me with those first steps and to you all for visiting; I hope you enjoy this virtual exhibition.

David Olivant - There Will Be Time

03 Feb 2021 – 26 Feb 2021

This exhibit provides a survey of some of the work which David produced during the time he was a professor at CSU Stanislaus-1995-2020. The work has undergone a number of radical shifts in medium and genre from detailed gestural abstraction in the mid 90’s to complex figurative narrative ceramics at the turn of the millennium. Moving into the new century his work continued the concerns of the ceramic sculptures while taking the form of large narrative pastel drawings. In the last six years or so of his tenure David sought to fuse the sculptural and the two-dimensional in about eighty assemblages which often utilized fragments of his earlier sculptures. All of the work was made with little sense of its final form and a reliance on contact with imagery arriving from unknown sources through a constant worrying and refashioning of the materials he worked with. This methodology formed the basis of some of his innovative approaches to teaching studio art, which sought to undermine the illusion of certitude and steady progress which tends to be a tacit assumption of art department curricula in the US. During his tenure at Stanislaus Olivant held solo exhibitions in India and Germany, as well as Fresno, Merced, Davis, Turlock, San Bernardino and Santa Clara, all in California. He now lives and makes art in Santa Fe NM. Artist Statement Although my work in this exhibit spans twenty years and a multitude of styles, materials, attitudes and genres, all of it is animated by the attempt to make contact with that which is likely uncontactable. My only recourse and one which I had recognized at the very outset of my career was to cease relying on any formulae or certitudes, as in doing so I would only rediscover what I already knew, which wasn’t much anyway. Gradually I realized that the “characters” in my paintings, drawings and sculptures, although they started life as extensions of myself should rightly be considered as autonomous personalities and hence something worth the effort of contacting even if it meant the renunciation of my own wishes for them. Around 2008 I realized, albeit gradually, that by fusing sculpture and painting - something that I believe was best accomplished by the medieval and renaissance sculptors of Northern Europe, artists like Veit Stoss and Tilman Riemenschneider – I could fuse two heterogeneous worlds in a manner that would suggest or embody, even, the type of “impossible” contact I was seeking. More recently (since 2018) that fusion of the real and the illusory, the solid and the flat has become again compressed and shifted in ways that I hope will erode the viewer’s certainties, both about the material nature of what they see in my work and about their own ontological integrity.

THE UNIVERSE MAKERS: Bassmi Ibrahim, Dellamarie Parrilli, Victoria Lowe, John Lyon Paul, & Anne Marchand curated by Dominique Nahas

22 Jan 2021 – 31 Dec 2021

Bassmi Ibrahim, Dellamarie Parrilli, Victoria Lowe, John Lyon Paul, and Anne Marchand are our universe-makers. To place their highly differentiated abstract aesthetic visions together so that they seem to react and inspire each other reminds me that this exhibition of visual persuasions is perhaps like visual chamber music of individual voices, heard collectively. These individual voices, passionately unique, create indelible experiences for the beholder.- Dominique Nahas, Curator

works made in 2020

26 Jan 2021 – 27 Jan 2021

The MS Virtual Visual Arts exhibition is just a small but representative sample of student’s work during the first semester of this academic year. ABA is very proud of the hard work every student has put into making the best out of this non traditional year and how they have adapted to new learning environments. Not only was it a new challenge for them to engage with such a hands-on subject through the computer, but they are also learning to share and present their work in new formats. 6th graders explored different art movements, 7th graders learnt about typography and started reflecting on who they are while also looking at the work of some other artists. 8th graders had the chance to reflect more deeply about their identity to represent it using some newly acquired techniques.

The History of Water

15 Jan 2021 – 13 Feb 2021

The History of Water: Joar Songcuya Curated by Charlie Samuya Veric Three-fourths of the natural world is water, a fact we tend to forget. In his inaugural solo show, Joar Songcuya returns our gaze to this forgotten milieu, disclosing a global history of oceans from the viewpoint of a Filipino mariner. In virtuosic works, Songcuya trains his telescopic eyes on the shapes of water. He reveals sunlight, cloud, fog, and rain—the weather defining maritime life. He also paints the never-ending arrivals and departures of ships, the emergences and disappearances of harbors that Songcuya has seen from ten years of global navigation from the Bay of Biscay to the wide Sargasso Sea. In doing so, Songcuya reveals the world of men at sea: the environment that shapes them and the longings that inspire their days. The pieces in the exhibition are richly atmospheric, the palettes and brushworks evoking a style that Songcuya has mastered idiomatically. Indeed, artists from Botticelli to Rembrandt, Hokusai to Turner, Homer to Sekula, and Hirst to Atienza have created pictures of oceans through the centuries. But not one of them was an actual sailor. Originally trained as a maritime engineer, Songcuya taught himself painting to escape from the engine rooms where he labored. A visual record of our times, the result is a sublime vision whose arrival The History of Water marks.

The Continuous Stream, Kala Bhavan Connect

22 Jan 2021 – 11 Feb 2021

Coordinated, Curated and Presented by Koeli Mukherjee Ghose, Anand Ghose & Poosapati Parameshwar Raju Kala Bhavana, the art school founded by Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan, celebrated its centenary last year. To present the art opus of the Kala Bhavan family, essentially the art school of Santiniketan Visva Bharati University, consisting of the alumni, the teachers and students, this an opportune moment, an exhibition that is long due to understand the ethos and the aesthetic of the Institution occupying a pre-eminent place in the history of modern Indian art, relatable to the practices of Bauhaus in the logic of parallelism with a difference. The curatorial underscore would be to integrate all the parallel strains and discern the pedagogic intertwinings reflecting in the exhibits that may be sectioned to deal with a full bodied participation and aligned according to the context at the core of the exhibits to express the -‘Continuous Stream of Kalabhavan Santiniketan.’
