Sarah Fahey

Wicklow/Dublin based artist/ NCAD college final year - paint

My work looks at my visual association with landscape. The vision for my work is to create a connection between something we see, and our memories from the past. Through landscape painting, I explore the different stages of my life; surrounded by everchanging scenes.

My take on landscape painting has been heavily influenced by the colour and warmth of places with hot climates, in conjunction with the form and depth of the Irish land. Living within many different landscapes as a child causes my early memories to confuse one place with another. I like to bring the put these recollections together to form a whole.

I explore how my perspective changes when looking at something I have grown up with, and something from a past experience. I question if the landscape has changed more, or I have.

The dichotomy of line, form, colour and texture represents the opposing influences of my visual experiences. Many of the landscapes represent all of the time I have spent looking up at the horizon or looking through the window of a car.

Through painting, textile and sculpture, I source imagery from my own photographs and line drawings of the surrounding area of Wicklow and south Dublin.

The finished works do not necessarily suggest an Irish landscape, but a surreal dream-like scene is the outcome of my research and inspiration.

    Sarah Fahey Degree Show

This exhibition contains a series of abstract landscape paintings created over the coarse of my final year at NCAD. The concept of my work derives from my visual association with landscape - through this I explore the different stages of my life; surrounded any ever-changing scenes. With the use of form, colour, and texture, each piece represents views of the horizons, the land and the sea. Each memory blends together - the colours of South Africa, the forms of Ireland and the open spaces of Sweden all hold a place within each of my pieces, and their representational roles in my work come together to create one painting.
