Ancient Nicomedia & Izmit Illustrations Exhibition

    02 May 2020 – 02 May 2023

ANCIENT NICOMEDIA & İZMİT ILLUSTRATIONS EXHIBITION MANIFEST With 2300 years of history, Izmit was called Nicomedia in the ancient times. After being the capital of the Hellenistic Bithynia Kingdom, the Roman Empire’s Bithynia Estate and the Roman Empire itself, Ancient Nicomedia was conquered by the Ottoman Emperor, Orhan Bey, in 1337. İzmit has preserved its historic significance throughout centuries with its geographical location and natural resources. Although it is known as “the city of kings and emperors” by travelers and has cultural importance, it is the least historically recognized city in modern Turkey. Despite its fame, there are very little historical relics left of Nicomedia and Ottoman İzmit. So, in order scientifically and artistically to make up for this historical deficit, I present these pieces of art. The exhibit, consisting of 21 pieces, is the work of 16 years. Each and every piece is the outcome of about 4 months of delicate work. The use of travel books, ancient texts, coins, excavation reports, historical documents and findings has led to the making of scientific products. These pieces of art which I have started to draw with the encouragement of my dear professor and colleague Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık has been displayed in Dolmabahçe Palace Exhibition Hall / Istanbul between January 27 - February 2 in 2014. In addition, a portion of these pieces are being displayed in the SEKA Paper Museum, which was founded in November 2016 in İzmit. I would like to thank the Art Nicomedia Association for the opportunity to present these pieces of art electronically to all of you. Historian and Artist Onur Şahna

    Mevlana and Whirling Dervishes

    01 May 2020 – 01 May 2023

International Painter Ecaterina Nicolau said, “In order to promote our culture better and gain meaning in a peaceful, loving life for our people, since UNESCO was declared as the year of World Mevlana Peace and Love in 2007, For the first time in the world, I opened a personal exhibition titled "Mevlana and Whirling Dervishes", under the coordination of Author, Poet Can Akın. Press and public opening in Kocaeli - Izmit Gar Art Gallery, Cumhuriyet Park - Izmit Municipality Art Gallery and Sabanci Cultural Center attracted great attention from the press and the public. I think that Mevlana's words, "Come no matter what you are, come again" should be better understood in order for humanity to remember the peace and love and to get closer to cultures.

Old & Today Izmit Photography Exhibition

With its current name being Izmit, the city’s ancient name Nicomedia was given after the Greek words Nike - meaning victory - and Medomai - meaning thinking. Izmit is a region that has historically developed as a city before the common era, and has been home to various civilizations over the course of history, whose traces can still be seen today. Over time, the region was named Olbia, Astakoz, Nicomedia, Iznikmid, Ismidt and İzmit respectively. Imagine a city which is known as an industrial city, but has nearly 500 approved and protected cultural sites. The city has traces of the Roman and Ottoman Empires, as well as the Republic Era of Turkey, and many more civilizations that have come and gone over the course of 2300 years, in which all of them have left a place or a structure to be remembered for. Nicomedia was once the capital of the Roman Empire, and during its golden age. The first edicts of toleration in the world were published in Nicomedia, which were turning points in World History. Being built in around 300 CE, the Nicomedia Ancient Theatre is waiting to be uncovered in Izmit’s most beautiful spot. Izmit Orhan Mosque is one of the only mosques in Turkey where the Friday Prayer is read with a sword. Kasr-ı Hümayun is the only palace in Turkey outside Istanbul that has been preserved until today. The mosque that Mimar Sinan built 600 years ago is still standing in the city. Many of the pieces who were supposed to be in Izmit today were transported to the British Museum in England, the Louvre in France and different museums throughout Europe during one of the biggest historical artifact exchanges in history, but many of them are still being displayed in the Kocaeli Archaeology Museum, including thousands of pieces from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Our photography exhibition “Old & Today Izmit”, where we, as the Art Nicomedia Association, aimed to portray the historical and cultural richness of the city we live in, was displayed in multiple national and international events.

"Gez Çiz Yaz İzmit" Karma Sergisi '2019

    20 Apr 2020 – 20 Apr 2023

Sevincimizi eserlerimizle sizlere ulaştırmak ortak tutkumuz oldu. Yapılar ve alanlar değişmese de bizler değişebilir, ilk defa görmenin, tanımanın verdiği mutluluğu yaşayabiliriz. Fotoğraf karesinde, notalarda, boyaların içinde, bir hikâyede, harflerin arasında, mısraların ruhunda tekrar tekrar vücuda getirdiğimiz tarihi eser ve alanların izlerini takip ederek hayretinize doğru bizimle yolculuğa çıkabilirsiniz. Fark et! Nicomedia’nın güzelliğini ... Fark et! Osmanlı’nın ihtişamını ... Fark et! Kentini ... Fark et! Kendini

"Life Goes On Izmit" Digital Photo Collage Exhibition

    18 Apr 2020 – 18 Apr 2021

Today it is called Izmit… It means “the city of those who think victory” derived from the ancient words Nicomedia, namely “nike / victory” and “medomai / think”. There are uncountable historical values all over this thousands years old city ... The works in our archeology museum are the best evidence of this. Many buildings of historical importance have been repaired over time and reached today. Before the Republic was established, the mansion of Sırrı Pasha, the last Governor of Izmit, the hunting manor, which was visited by Ataturk from time to time, the Yeni Cuma Mosque built by Mimar Sinan and many more are the best examples of this. Great leader Ataturk passed 52 times from Izmit, and a welcoming ceremony was prepared for him 7 times, including his funeral. Time … When the past is left behind, the future is hoped and today is lived. Our family, friends, the houses, the schools, the cities we visit and the places have a history. Just like historical buildings. They are also important with their past. Perhaps, it hosted important events not only for us but also for the city, country and the world we live in. Important agreements have been signed in those buildings. Although people think that societies are developing with technology, they should not forget what kind of life they had before and keep it alive. With this in mind, I tried to combine the past and the present with collage work. We hope to live knowing that every place we step in, every person we talk to and everything we see has a past… I present my endless thanks to leading the creation of this exhibition, Akın Ülkü Sevinç, Art Nicomedia Culture and Art Association President, my dear wife Merve Bilgen Akyüz, my family, institutions and organizations.

İzmit Tarihinde İz Bırakanlar Yağlıboya Resim Sergisi

    12 Apr 2020 – 15 Apr 2021
