    Joshua Raz

Josh Raz graduated from Newcastle University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art and has continued to live and work in Newcastle upon Tyne since. Since winning the Hix Award in 2016, Raz was featured in GQ magazine (May 2017) and has since produced two solo shows, ‘The Atrophy Experience’, held at Hix Gallery, London in 2017 and ‘Hubris and a Whimper’, held at Abject Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne in 2018. Between these two exhibitions, Raz has completed a residency in Al Cuz Cuz, situated in the mountains of Malaga, Spain and has participated in a number of group shows. Most recently, Raz has exhibited at Christie’s and Unit London as a part of the group shows ‘Uncovers’ (2019) and ‘Beyond Borders’ (2019/2020). His artwork explores his experiences and personal connections with spaces, objects and people around him, using spray paint and sculpture to give them vibrance and a voice, which can be heard, even in busy city centre surroundings.

    Aly & Mick

Collection of works from Aly & Mick Smith Mick and Aly have been together for 18 years and their passion and love for not only art, but each other is truly admirable. Aly, originally from Norfolk but moved to Newcastle in 1988, Aly explained her past her struggles with Bi polar, other mental health issues and how art has aided her in managing these challenges.“I find it hard to ask for help - going straight from a paid job, to ESA and then universal credit and having to use a food bank ourselves I found that really hard”. Mick, born and bred in Newcastle (Denton Burn to be exact) has been an artist for many years and has been involved in various local projects. From working with homeless people, to the probation service and putting on exhibitions across the North East. However much of that changed recently. Mick had a bonfire accident back in March 2020 which caused him to have partial loss of sight in both of his eyes. Mick spent months in and out of hospitals whilst they worked to regain his sight. Mick’s grit and determination enabled him to recover much of his vision, however this impacted his ability to practice art in a substantial way. Although Mick’s accident left him unable to perform his former portrait and more detailed pieces, it opened up a new opportunity for Mick to explore landscape and abstract works.

    Sophia Juergens

Sophia Juergens is a painter and installation artist. The paintings often involve gradually building up layers of elements. This is a process which may take months. Those layers show repetitions of bits and pieces that either at some point in the artist's life engraved themselves into her pictorial memory, or impose themselves during the act of painting. She works with pigments, oil, balsam turpentine and resin. Stirring the colours, dealing with their consistency, is an essential part of showing the diversity of the haptic of colour on her canvases. She likes to use the paintings that she creates, to melt, as it were, into the environment by printing large scale patterns of details of them or combining them with wall paintings and video. Juergens lives and works in Newcastle, United Kingdom. She holds a BFA from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Ottersberg, Germany, as well as an MFA from the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Her first solo exhibition was in Hamburg, Germany (2016) at the gallery 'Level one', followed by a solo exhibition at 'Städtische Galerie', Bremen, Germany (2018). Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Overbeckgesellschaft Lübeck in cooperation with HKS, Ottersberg, Germany (2015), at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia, in cooperation with HKS Ottersberg and University of Zulia, Venezuela (2017), at Jeannie Avent Gallery, London (2020), at Audain Gallery, in cooperation with Newcastle University and University of Victoria, Victoria, Canada (2020), among others.
