Hoshige: Landscapes Inspired by Impressionism and Japanese Art

'This virtual exhibition presents different artworks from my figurative period: landscapes. I have been inspired by classical subjects from impressionism: sunset and reflection of light on water. Japanese art has also influenced my production: prints with japanese bridge and mount Fuji. I paint with acrylic on canvas in a non-realistic style. Mixing acrylic and gold leaf permits to have a shiny effect in the painting. It is for aesthetic purposes.' - Hoshige

    Yinka Shonibare CBE

Yinka Shonibare CBE is a leading contemporary artist, working to explore post-colonialism in the context of globalisation. Shonibare was born in 1962 in London and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. The artist returned to London to study Fine Art at the Byam School (now known as Central Saint Martins), and received an MFA from Goldsmiths. Today, Shonibare works across painting, sculpture, photography, installation and film with his team of assistants, who are required since the artist became paralysed in half of his body after falling ill with transverse myelitis at the age of 17. gowithYamo Virtual: Black Contemporary Visual Artists Working Today

This is by no means a complete list of Black artists creating work around societal, political, cultural and racial issues but could be a good starting point for those looking to discover work by some important and influential artists working today. As in all parts of society, racial bias is an issue the art world faces and must be tackled by recognising the importance of diverse cultures to the history of art and listening to the contemporary voices at work today.

Between Abstract Art and Figurative Art

'This virtual exhibition presents some artworks from my period revolving around lights and nature. It also shows my recent evolution towards figurative art with landscapes using the same technique as before. My reflection is about finding a way to reintroduce classical subjects in contemporary art. Representing elements of the environment with a non-realistic style is the purpose of my latest work. Japanese Art has influenced my production.' - Hoshige

gowithYamo Virtual: The Impact of Climate Change

We are living in strange, scary and unprecedented times. Our political and social communities are experiencing the kind of upheaval one would only see during a political or royal coup. Despite that, it is not all bad news and through our collective global effort to battle this silent killer, the ozone layer is healing. Air pollution has dropped in UK cities and there is a marked drop in pollution across Asia’s urban and industrial hotspots. Many contemporary artists have been addressing the issue of climate change in their works; here is our selection.
