Jupp Soetebier: Die von Gott erlaubte Sintflut

There are three life altering sea-changes that I clearly feel resonating within my being. The first occurred millennia ago when a great wall of water swept the last remnants and inhabitants of Doggerland away and under the waves -- scattering my ancestors around the rim lands of the North Sea and indelibly etching the awe, wonder, and trauma deep within the DNA of my people. The second was the massive wave of immigrants from Germany to America between the mid 1800s and early 1900s that brought both my father and mother's families from the farmlands of Westfalen, Hessen, and Württemberg to the Missouri river lands west of St. Louis -- forever altering the course of my German heritage and shared experience from that of my cousins who stayed behind. And lastly, a personal exploration of rebirth in the "Here & Now" -- of embracing the echoes of my soul and letting it overtake me. A complicated singularly focused visual story of family, of life, of death, and of rebirth. ***** A note about the title: In carefully choosing the word 'permitted' (the German 'erlaubte' = allowed), part of my meaning is that while the God of the title did not willfully cause of the deluge, by looking away he/she allows it to happen. ***** Further note: While trained early on as a figurative draftsman; for this series I choose to portray my thoughts in a non-representation style as to allow anyone from any background to find their own personal journey resonating within the images.
