The Last Sentinels

11 Jan 2022 – 08 Mar 2022

The few on this planet who still live in harmony with ancient wisdom are Indigenous peoples. While allowing themselves to be guided by courage, love, and honour, these cultures are the guardians of both humanity and this planet. They are the living example of how to live with respect to our natural environment; how to understand that we are all united; how to live our lives to the fullest. Our aim is that through this experience, the visitor regains the connection with the source of what it is to be human. We, living in the industrialised world, have distanced ourselves from our origins and tend to have forgotten the purpose of living in full connection with each other, ourselves and the natural world. By making 'The Last Sentinels', we proclaim the urgency to acknowledge and celebrate Indigenous peoples as our new role models. Now is the time to reconnect the world and move healthily into the future.

AX the Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex

08 Jan 2022 – 26 Feb 2022

AX is proud to welcome PICTUS to the gallery. PICTUS consists of a series of mixed media and acrylic paintings by Moncton-based artist Jared Betts. The exhibition is curated by Paul Édouard Bourque, who had this to say about Jared’s work: Jared Betts is currently engaged in exploring cutting edge expression modes in the field of contemporary painting. His use of gesture and expressionist forms has since the onset set the tone for his highly charged pictorial works. Betts aims at rethinking the very parameters of contemporary painting, and his work as such touches on many pertinent and pressing concerns around the practice of chromatic mark-making, and how these relate to artistic ideals in the 21st century.

Aleš Hudeček: 370 NM

12 Jan 2022 – 08 Mar 2022

Ostravský umělec Aleš Hudeček (*1973) ve svých obrazech i akvarelech zůstává nadále věrný své typické malířské poloze tematizující narativitu v malbě prostřednictvím paradoxů budovaných na kontrastním vztahu lidských figur a neživých objektů a útvarů uváděných do nepatřičných konstelací a indiferentních situací, jež snad mají vztah k něčemu (autorem) někdy či mimochodem viděnému. Pózy, gesta a pohledy převážně ženských aktérek spolu s převládajícím amorfně neurčitým barevným pozadím, jež může někdy navozovat dojem krajiny a jindy zase interiéru, vyvolávají dojem zakoušených každodenních situací převedených do jakýchsi existenciálně laděných rituálů. _________________________________________________________________ The Ostrava painter Aleš Hudeček (*1973) remains faithful to the narrativity in his paintings through paradoxes built on the contrasting relationship between human figures and inanimate objects that are positioned in an inappropriate manner. The poses, gestures and glances of mostly female actors, which go hand in hand with the background of an indeterminate colour, may evoke sometimes landscapes, sometimes interiors that give the impression of experienced everyday situations that are transformed into some kind of existentially tuned rituals. At first glance, the exhibition’s title may evoke contradictory feelings—370 nm (i.e., nanometres) express the difference between the minimum (390) and maximum (760) wavelength of the visible light spectrum. In Hudeček's interpretation, light and colour—the properties of the spectre—are conceived as the essential paradox of painting, which cannot exist without a colour and the possibility of seeing it. At the same time, it is absolutely impossible to reduce them to numbers that express limits of the physical quantities. In his current paintings, Hudeček conceives of light as a very active agent of what is captured in the paintings. It is the light that prompts the actors to act by how it is covertly present, mysteriously evocative, and naturally unforced in its (sometimes manipulatively interpretive) emanation. The exhibition is curated by Martin Mikolášek.

Farbfelder beziehen sich aufeinander, Formen treten an ihren Rändern in Kontakt, Bildkanten erzählen eigene Geschichten“ | A. v. Altenbockum
